Cultural appropriation or Cultural fusion

1. This section discusses sexual minorities within the context of culture. I approach it from the perspective of a heterosexual male. Using a short film lasting about a minute and a half, I narrate how a heterosexual Chinese male would employ photographic techniques to depict sexual minorities under the influence of traditional Chinese feudal thought.

I attempt to immerse myself in the role of a homosexual individual, utilizing visual language to depict the loneliness of a male homosexual dancing in a straight male-oriented club. Additionally, I portray the frustration of a female homosexual who summoned the courage to come out to her mother, but met with failure. The dominant color scheme in my video is red and green, with spare shots depicted in shades of gray, aiming to accentuate the sense of oppression within the frames. I employ montage editing techniques to convey my message. The music chosen is calming and light, as I intend for it to contrast with the imagery.

The moment where I look back represents my endeavor to approach this group from an entirely new angle. However, I refrained from using more intense methods of expression, as this is the visceral impression brought about by China's five-thousand-year history of sexual repression. This repression, lack of freedom, and stifling atmosphere depict the current societal oppression of sexual minorities in China. This work resides in the realm between cultural appropriation and cultural fusion. I utilize their culture to depict a phenomenon.

2. Background:

China advocates atheism and considers Western faith to be a virus, so it does not want a massive spread of faith. Not only faith, but also China does not advocate Western festivals. It also contradicts some traditional Western culture. I hope cultural freedom and freedom of belief. I am a Christian, and the situation of Christians in China makes me think that China needs cultural freedom. So, what I want this video to say is that cultures need to merge. I wanted to use the cello to represent a cultural medium, playing in different parts of the London .

Cello is a rare instrument in China, its audience is not very wide, and it is just like Western culture in China. In every place where there is a crowd or culture, only one bar of music is played in each place, and finally a whole piece of music is put together. I want to play a traditional Chinese folk music called "Jasmine Flower".

Form:

Jasmine Flower" has a very high status among Chinese folk songs, and it is also popular among Chinese and Western music communities at home and abroad. There are several versions of "Jasmine Flower" circulating in different parts of China, and each version of the tune is like me playing the same piece of music in different parts of London.

The pentatonic scale of "Jasmine Flower" has a distinctive national character, and its smooth melody and well-proportioned structure with periodic repetitions are compatible with Western aesthetics, which has made it possible for it to spread in the Western world.

Third part of my final outcome

3.Firstly, I chose photography as my medium because it is an incredibly expressive form of art. Through the lens, I can visually capture the intersections and blending of different cultures in a way that video allows. The perspective of the camera lens enables me to immerse the audience in the scenes I have experienced, allowing them to personally feel the power of cultural fusion.

In this work, I employed a technique called "match cut." This technique achieves smooth transitions between different scenes by finding common elements or visual connections, thereby enhancing the coherence and depth of the story. It's not just a technical device; it's also a part of the theme I'm trying to convey. Cultural fusion is not a abrupt or discordant process; it's about connecting different elements in various ways to create a new and unique aesthetic.

The changing scenes represent different cultures, and I have been traveling while remaining constant, creating a stark contrast with the background. Just as I intended to express, we need to experience different cultures to reach the other shore, and this process is diverse. Similarly, in today's society, if everyone clings to their own culture, I believe that society will not progress.

Regarding the title "Cultural Fusion," I chose this title to accurately convey the core theme of my work. In today's world, communication and fusion between different cultures are becoming increasingly important. My work seeks to explore this theme by presenting the interactions and exchanges between cultures and among individuals through my journey and scene transitions.
